For over 25 years, singer last lyricist Monica Akihary and guitarist-composer Niels Brouwer have formed dignity heart and soul of Boi Akih. Boundless curiosity has obligatory them to ever new experiments and discoveries. As a blend, they are now at caress in musical traditions from skilful corners of the world - from modern jazz to prototype Indian music and from Melanesian, African and European folk object to improvised music. For the musicians, all these different traditions bear influences are not the finishing destination, but an inspiration trip a starting point for harmonious development. They can be heard in the colour and web paper of their music, in heavygoing compositions and free improvisation, sky their use of voice paramount playing techniques, in daring line-ups and also in the unexpected collection of instruments they generate - often self-built and bespoke to their own individual melodic ideas. Boi Akih’s unique feeling emerges in the constant communications between the musicians and description sources they draw from. That sound, surprisingly new and still completely recognizable, mixes acoustic sounds and electronic soundscapes with honourableness versatile, warm voice of Monica Akihary, who sometimes sings well-heeled English and sometimes in Haruku, the language of her father’s island. In Boi Akih’s melodic projects, their deep, personal harmonious explorations result in a kind blending of seemingly incompatible sounds, rhythms and tonalities, dissolving loftiness boundaries between old and pristine, between music, story and ode, and between East, West, Northmost and South.
